Welcome, I’m Philippe Griffiths reporting to you live from the capital of Vietnam. There have been many effects in the Vietnam War, some specific numbers were 58,000 US soldiers died and 304,000 wounded, and on the Vietnam side there was 3 to 4 million soldiers dead. Besides deaths, the War affected a lot of other things. A lot of emotion was stirred on the American side because it was the first time America as a whole had ever lost a war. This lead to a harsh welcoming for the surviving troops that came back to America. Besides that President Johnson lied about things he had done in Vietnam so he lost his trust and did not run for reelection. And people doubted American power and credibility. But when Vietnam was in civil war President John F. Kennedy gave military support as well as economic support to south Vietnam to stop communism from spreading to it. Now we go to Hanna Yin in Delhi giving us the timeline of the war.
The Vietnam War was mainly caused by the United States wanting to stop the spread of communism across the world, and to do this they started with Vietnam. They thought that if one was to fall to communism the surrounding states would fall to communism as well. This is called the domino theory. They did this so that they could stop the shrinkage of the free world to help capitalism stay alive. Many capitalist countries used this as an excuse for being involved in Southeast Asia. So the United States were afraid of the idea of communism being spread across the world so they took action in trying to stop the spread of it.
Thank you and good bye we will see you next time on History’s conflicts.
